There are a number of organisations and charities that will give free legal advice to help members of the public understand different aspects of the law and these include;

Citizen’s Advice Bureau
Gives advice and help at no cost regarding legal rights on a wide range of issues and may also be able to put you in touch with a local solicitor who has experience in similar cases to yours.
Motoring Organisations
Many motoring organisation, including the AA or the RAC offer information on personal injury compensation in regards to motoring matters.
Pressure Groups
Pressure groups often offer legal action at no cost if your problem is of interest to them. The Commission for Racial Equality will offer advice on racial discrimination and the Equal Opportunities Commission will advise on discrimination on the grounds of sex.
Law Centre
Larger towns and cities often have Law Centres which provide information, however they often specialise in matters connected to inner city deprivation including employment law, welfare, housing and immigration.
Insurance
An insurance policy for your car or for your home or your home contents may offer free legal advice and often includes cover for the cost of taking a case to court, and will usually include cover to prevent you from being personally ordered to pay the other sides costs if the claim is lost.
Solicitors
Legal aid is still available for claims for medical negligence and some family matters. Solicitors will also often give a free first interview to see if the problem is a viable claim that is worth pursuing and many will thereafter deal with the case on a no win no fee basis. Some of the larger firms of solicitor are involved in organised ‘pro bono’ work, that is to say they do not charge for dealing with certain types of deserving court cases.
Barristers
Barristers are in a similar position to solicitors and will often do problem work for which they will not get paid on a ‘pro bono’ basis.
The County Court
The local court office staff will provide information about the court procedures including The Small Claims Court and they have fact sheets, leaflets and brochures to give information and assistance and a guide to help with the issue if proceedings.
