Crashes involving bikes kill over 100 people every year and almost all deaths involve collisions with motor vehicles. Information that is available is as follows;

  • Summer has the highest percentage of deaths.
  • Half of all deaths occur in mid afternoon or in the early evening.
  • Males are several times more likely to die than females.
  • Most accidents occur close to home, often on driveways or pavements.
  • Most head injuries can be prevented by a helmet.
  • Most bike riders do not wear a helmet which is the most effective protection against brain injury.

Approximately one third of all bicycle accident related deaths and serious trauma occur at road junctions specifically;

  • bike rider and motorist travelling at right angles to one another and both going straight ahead at a junction
  • rider turning right across a road and into the path of oncoming traffic
  • motorist emerging into path of a rider usually from a side road or driveway
  • Motorist turning across path of rider when travelling in the opposite direction or after having overtaken the cyclist
  • cyclist riding into the road and into the path of a motor vehicle particularly when riding off a pavement or out of a drive way or side exit
  • rider overtaking another, often parked vehicle and being hit from behind

Our solicitors are personal injury specialists and are able to make a cycle accident claim even if you were partly to blame. Most of the circumstances in which compensation can be claimed are outlined below;

  • collisions with other vehicles particularly with cars or lorries in the circumstances outlined above
  • loss of control or falling off a bike when trying to avoid a collision with another road user
  • defective road surfaces including potholes, protrusions, cracks or excess gravel can lead to a successful compensation claim. The authority with responsibility for the road must both have known of the defect and failed to repair it or have failed to carry out regular inspections of the road to facilitate maintenance.
  • spillages or leaks of substances onto the highway can result in legal action to claim compensation if the person responsible can be identified.
